Uganda is home to 11 national parks and a number of game reserves, inlcuding Kidepo Valley National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and the Katonga Wildlife Reserve. Its variety of natural resources and geographical features, from mountains to plains to large expanses of tropical forests rich in flora and fauna, has made Uganda a biodiversity hotspot and helps form the foundation of the country’s tourism industry.
Uganda and its protected areas are home to over 330 species of mammals, 7 of which are endangered, 21 are vulnerable, and 17 are near-threatened. Among these species are the world-famous tree-climbing lions of Queen Elizabeth National Park, so be sure not to miss them. Additionally, 100,000 species of invertebrates have been identified countrywide including an astonishing 1,200 species of butterfly, almost 50 of which are endemic.
These national parks and reserves offer safe and excellent safari opportunities since all are monitored and carefully protected by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and its team of park rangers.
